Stages of Development-Cultural Differences in Parenting
There many differences in parenting styles in different countries all over the world. For example, in China, many parents use a style that has been named "training." In this style, socialization has a high value on parent control and child obedience. The control is presented in a warm, caring, and loving way and is highly supportive. Authoritarian parents do not use the "training" style, but studies have shown that children who grew up with the different parenting styles have had similar outcomes. Similar high control and high warmth parenting styles have also been found in other communities as well, like African-American and poor income white communities in the inner cities of the United States. Many believe that the combination of strict rules with loving care protects children from harsh realities in everyday life and also help them to perform to their best academically, socially, and athletically.
